Scottish, Scots, Scotch
Шотландский. Эта группа слов является очень «чувствительной», особенно у шотландцев. Все три прилагательных существуют в обиходной речи, но Scotch — самое редко употребляемое слово и встречается только в определённых выражениях: Scotch broth — перловый суп; Scotch whisky — шотландское виски; Scotch tape — клейкая лента, скотч; Scotch mist — густой туман; a Scotch marriage — это брак между английскими молодыми возлюбленными, убежавшими в Гретна-Грин, пограничную шотландскую деревню, где до 1969 г. по шотландскому закону разрешался брак несовершеннолетних; a Scotch egg — это яйцо в колбасном фарше и толчёных сухарях. Язык, на котором говорят в шотландских низинах, называют Scots. Слово Scots также встречается в названиях некоторых шотландских полков (Scots Guards, Scots Greys и др.). Шотландский народ и шотландцы — это the Scottish people, the Scots. Однако не всем шотландцам нравятся эти названия, существуют синонимы: Scotsman/Scotswoman и Scotchman/Scotchwoman.
